Three people were killed and three were injured in a shooting this Sunday (07.17.2022) in an Indiana shopping center, authorities said, the latest in a wave of gun violence in the United States.

“We experienced a mass shooting tonight at the Greenwood Park Mall,” said Mark Myers, mayor of the town of Greenwood, in a statement.

“Right now we have three dead and three wounded,” said Myers, who explained that the shooter had been killed by “an armed individual.”

Greenwood police asked witnesses to the shooting on their Facebook page to contact them for information.

It is the latest incident in a wave of gun violence sweeping the United States, where some 40,000 gun deaths a year are reported, according to the Gun Violence Archive.

The attack came a couple of weeks after a gunman opened fire at a Fourth of July parade in an affluent Chicago suburb that left seven dead and at least three dozen wounded.

It also took place after two massacres in May: 10 African-Americans were shot dead in a supermarket in Buffalo, in the state of New York; and 19 children and two teachers were killed at an elementary school in Texas.

The recent rise in gun violence has reignited the harsh debate over gun regulation in the country. A House committee will vote this week for the first time in nearly 20 years on a bill to ban assault rifles.
