An unusual event took place during a recent NFL game between the Jets and the 49ers in San Francisco, as the final score led to a unique statistical milestone in the league’s history. It’s rare for a game to conclude with a score that has never been recorded before, but that was the case on this occasion.
As the game headed into its final moments, the score stood at 32-13 in favor of the 49ers. Many were curious if the two teams would create a “scorigami,” which refers to a game ending with a final score that has never happened in the NFL. This intrigue only intensified as the clock ticked down.
With just 30 seconds remaining, Jets quarterback Tyrod Taylor connected with wide receiver Allen Lazard for a touchdown, narrowing the score to 32-19. However, the failed two-point conversion attempt that followed was particularly significant, as it established the final score as 32-19—a novel outcome within the history of the NFL.
This marked the 1,085th unique final score recorded in league history. Had the Jets successfully executed the two-point conversion, the final score would have been 32-21, which has occurred several times before, thus negating the potential for a scorigami. Notably, this was the second time the Jets came up short on a two-point conversion during the game.
The 49ers, under head coach Kyle Shanahan, have now participated in a scorigami on eight separate occasions. However, there had been a notable gap in time since the last one, which took place in September 2020 when the 49ers triumphed over the Giants with a score of 36-9.
In contrast, the Jets have only been involved in a scorigami twice since the 2015 season. Their previous encounter with this phenomenon happened in November 2021, during a game in which they faced a 45-30 defeat against the Indianapolis Colts.
Remarkably, this year marked the second consecutive season in which a scorigami occurred during the first week of play. The 2023 season saw a total of nine such unique scores, yet as more games unfold and scores accumulate, the likelihood of achieving nine or more scorigamis in the upcoming 2024 season appears slim.
