Tragedy struck in Lehi, Utah, where an 8-year-old boy accidentally shot himself with a loaded firearm left in a vehicle. The incident occurred around 7:40 p.m. on a Monday while the boy’s mother was inside a convenience store, confirmed Jeanteil Livingston of the Lehi City Police Department.
The boy was inside the car parked at a Maverick gas station when he shot himself in the head. He was quickly transported to a local hospital in critical condition and later airlifted to another hospital. Unfortunately, he succumbed to his injuries on Tuesday morning.
Authorities described the shooting as unintentional and self-inflicted. The firearm was discovered under a seat in the vehicle; however, investigators are uncertain whether the gun’s safety mechanism was engaged at the time of the accident.
Witness Doug Shields recounted the moment he heard the gunshot followed by the sound of a woman screaming. He approached the car where the incident took place and overheard the boy’s mother mentioning that her son had found the weapon beneath the seat.
This heartbreaking incident comes less than two weeks after another tragedy in Utah, where a 5-year-old boy died after accidentally shooting himself with a handgun in his home located in Santaquin, approximately 65 miles south of Salt Lake City.
Utah currently lacks laws holding individuals accountable for leaving firearms unsecured and accessible to minors. According to the Giffords Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence, the state does not mandate how to store unattended firearms, nor does it require that locking devices be included with gun sales.
As of now, no charges have been filed against the boy’s mother. The local authorities are continuing their investigation into the circumstances surrounding the shooting. In a similar vein, last week, Michigan law enforcement charged the parents of a 9-year-old boy who injured himself due to a lack of safe storage of a firearm.
In another tragic event occurring on the same day, a 4-year-old girl in St. Louis lost her life from a gunshot wound while in the company of three other children under the age of 10 and without any adults present. Authorities are currently investigating who may have been handling the firearm during the incident.
The ongoing pattern of such incidents raises serious concerns about gun safety and the need for stricter regulations. The community is in mourning, highlighting the urgent need for awareness and preventive measures to address the potential dangers posed by easily accessible firearms. Without legislative change, the risks associated with unsecured firearms remain significant, endangering children and families alike.
As investigations continue, it is hoped that these incidents will serve as catalysts for discussions surrounding gun safety laws, focusing on protecting the most vulnerable members of society.
