A 17-year-old Indian teenager sells his wife to buy a smartphone

Indian Odisha State Police detained a 17-year-old teenager who sold his wife to a 55-year-old man, reports Hindustan Times.

The young man married a 26-year-old woman in July, but a month after the wedding, the newlyweds moved to the state of Rajasthan, where the boy began working in a brick kiln. Later, he returned to his hometown, but without his wife.

When asked by relatives about the whereabouts of his partner, the man replied that he had run away. The woman’s family did not believe the claim and filed a complaint with the police, who soon discovered some loopholes in the story.

Eventually, it was revealed that her husband sold her to a man she met in Rajasthan, for 180,000 rupees (about $ 2,400). The subject claimed that he used the money to buy a smartphone.

However, when a team of police officers arrived in Rajasthan to take the woman back home, the locals did not allow it, insisting that the young woman had been bought.

“We were able to bring her back home with great difficulty,” said one officer.

The 17-year-old was brought before a court and sent to a juvenile correctional facility.
