A man recently released from prison killed the woman he had threatened 22 years ago, at his home in the District of Columbia (United States), they report local media.

Last Friday, police officers found Sylvia Matthews, 71, wounded inside her home. The alleged attacker was close to her. Michael Garrett, 66, said he went to the scene to find out how the woman was but upon arrival, he found her in that condition.

Matthews was admitted to the hospital where she passed away the next day. Garrett was arrested and initially charged with assault with intent to kill. Police are currently working to bring additional charges against the man.

In 1999, the subject entered the victim’s home and chased her to a neighbor’s house. He was then arrested and jailed, but recently he was released on humanitarian grounds when covid-19 spread among the prison population.

“We are devastated. It is as if the system failed us,” said a relative of the woman.
