Acciona Energía to build $1.3 billion wind farm in Australia

Spain’s Acciona Energía announced plans on Monday to build a 2 billion Australian dollar ($1.34 billion) wind farm in Australia, nearly doubling its investment and generation capacity at a site in the northeastern state of Queensland.

The Herries Range 1,000-megawatt (MW) wind farm will be built at the MacIntyre wind farm, where the renewables and infrastructure conglomerate is already building a 923 MW wind farm alongside a state-owned one.

Queensland has been pushing to attract investment in wind and solar farms, as it wants 70% of the state’s energy to be supplied by renewables by 2032 and hopes to create more jobs.

The more than 2,000 MW of capacity of the enclosure, with an investment of more than 4,000 million Australian dollars, will provide enough clean energy to supply the equivalent of 1.4 million homes annually, the Spanish company said.

“With this project, we hope to dramatically accelerate the decarbonisation of Queensland’s electricity grid,” Acciona Energía Australia Managing Director Brett Wickham said in a statement.

The Herries Range project will create up to 600 new jobs during construction, the state’s deputy chief minister, Steven Miles, said in a statement.
