Adrien Rabiot, the French international midfielder, has officially joined Marseille after successfully completing his medical examination, as announced by the club on Tuesday.
Rabiot, known for his skillful play, is expected to bring an exciting dynamic to Ligue 1, especially following the departure of Kylian Mbappé, who transferred from Paris Saint-Germain to Real Madrid earlier this summer.
The specifics of Rabiot’s contract have not been revealed by Marseille.
Upon his arrival at the local airport on Monday evening, Rabiot was welcomed by a crowd of enthusiastic supporters.
The 29-year-old midfielder was a free agent after opting not to renew his contract with Juventus, where he had a five-year stint. His move to Marseille is likely to provoke strong reactions from PSG, his former club.
Born in Val-de-Marne, near Paris, Rabiot joined PSG’s youth academy at the young age of 15 and went on to make 227 appearances for the first team. During his tenure at PSG, he won six French league titles, but his departure in the summer of 2019 was marked by controversy as he transferred to Juventus on a free deal.
While with Juventus, Rabiot added further silverware to his collection, securing one Serie A title, two Italian Cups, and an Italian Super Cup.
On the international stage, Rabiot has earned 48 caps for France. He recently participated in Euro 2024, where the French national team reached the semifinals before falling to Spain.
Marseille, the only French club to have won the Champions League in 1993, is enjoying a strong start to the current league season under the guidance of new coach Roberto de Zerbi.
This summer, the club has made several notable signings, including Mason Greenwood, Neal Maupay, and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg. With an impressive run thus far, the nine-time champions sit just two points behind PSG after four matches.
As two of the most formidable clubs in French football, PSG and Marseille are gearing up for their next clash on October 27. This highly anticipated matchup, known as Le Classique, is one of the most significant fixtures in French soccer.
