Aitana Bonmatí, the reigning Ballon d’Or winner, is set to become the highest-paid player in women’s football following her new long-term contract with FC Barcelona, according to sources reports by ESPN.
At 26 years old, Bonmatí is currently out of contract at the end of the season, but both the player and the club are eager to finalize an extension as soon as possible.
There is now a preliminary agreement in place that will secure the Spain international’s future at Barça with a multi-year deal.
While some details are still pending clarification, an official announcement is anticipated before the end of September.
In women’s football, salary figures are often undisclosed. However, top earners in leagues such as the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) and the Women’s Super League (WSL) earn between €400,000 (approximately $443,602) and €600,000 annually.
Outside the United States and England, clubs like FC Barcelona and Lyon are also known for offering competitive salaries, with notable former Ballon d’Or winners like Alexia Putellas and Ada Hegerberg recently having signed lucrative new contracts with their respective teams.
Sources indicate that Bonmatí’s new deal will exceed any existing wages in the women’s game, highlighting Barça’s commitment to remain at the pinnacle of European football.
Reports have mentioned that Chelsea was actively pursuing Bonmatí, with her agent confirming that the English club was willing to pay the €3 million release clause in her contract.
“Chelsea were willing to pay the clause,” Cristian Martín shared with Catalunya Radio. “That Barça can compete with offers like that demonstrates they are not cutting the budget for the women’s team; quite the opposite.”
Furthermore, Martín noted that Barça aims to continue capitalizing on the legacy they are building in women’s football. He stated that the club has effectively monetized its brand and is focused on consolidating its dominance in the sport with Bonmatí playing a crucial role in that mission.
Since joining Barça’s academy in 2012, Bonmatí has made over 250 appearances for the first team. Her trophy cabinet boasts five league titles and three Champions League victories, among other accolades.
In addition to her club success, she has also played a pivotal role in Spain’s triumphs at the Women’s World Cup and the UEFA Women’s Nations League, earning both the Ballon d’Or and The Best FIFA Women’s Player awards in 2023.
This upcoming contract is not only a significant financial investment in Bonmatí but also a strategic move to strengthen Barcelona’s position as a leader in women’s football globally. The club is committed to building a team capable of achieving greater success and securing its legacy for years to come.
