Guido Fienga, CEO of Al Nassr, has clarified that Cristiano Ronaldo does not have control over the club, although he acknowledged the significant influence the Portuguese captain has within the team.
This statement comes in response to recent speculation suggesting that Ronaldo’s presence affects both on-field and off-field decisions at Al Nassr.
Fienga’s remarks followed the club’s decision to dismiss Portuguese coach Luis Castro after just one win from three league matches. Italian manager Stefano Pioli has been appointed as the new head coach.
During a club event, Fienga stated, “Cristiano Ronaldo is our captain, and he is the strongest player in the world, not just in terms of his technical skills but also his behavior.”
He further emphasized that while Ronaldo is a key figure within the club, “Cristiano Ronaldo doesn’t control the club. However, being the number one in the world, he naturally provides direction on where we need to go and the goals we aim to achieve.” Fienga described the veteran forward as a winner and expressed the desire for Ronaldo to share his winning mentality with the team.
Since joining Al Nassr in December 2022 from Manchester United, the 39-year-old Ronaldo has helped the team secure only one title: the Arab Club Champions Cup.
Ronaldo’s determination for victory was evident after the team’s King’s Cup final defeat against Al Hilal in May, where he was seen visibly emotional, reflecting the disappointment of a trophyless season.
Ronaldo was unable to participate in Al Nassr’s recent 1-1 draw against Al Shorta in the revamped Asian Champions League due to illness, which turned out to be Castro’s last match at the helm.
Fienga also spoke about the club’s strategy, stating, “We will improve step by step. This summer, let’s not forget that we invested nearly $100 million in new players. I believe we have done a commendable job reinforcing the squad with quality players that we really needed.” He highlighted the importance of stability within the club, emphasizing the need to foster growth rather than dismantling it every six months.
As the season progresses, it remains to be seen how the changes in coaching and the leadership of Ronaldo will impact the team’s performance on the pitch. With high expectations set for the current campaign, both players and management will be working diligently to elevate Al Nassr back to the top of the football hierarchy.
