Amy Grant is sharing her experiences following a traumatic bike accident that had a significant emotional impact on her life. The Christian singer, now 63, opened up about her recovery journey in a recent interview, reflecting on how the accident led her to experience depression.

In the conversation, Grant revealed that she spent an entire month not leaving her home and avoiding any screens after the incident. She emphasized the importance of patience with herself during this difficult time. “I’ve had a lot of good, hard cries,” she explained. “And I went through depression. But everybody is recovering from something. That’s life. If nothing else, we recover every day from the shock of what it means to age.”

One of the more challenging aspects of her recovery has been dealing with the loss of what she referred to as her “superpower”—her remarkable memory. “Now I can’t trust my memory,” she confessed. Yet, she believes that there are hidden blessings in every experience, even the painful ones.

In light of her accident and an open-heart surgery during the pandemic, Grant has adopted a more proactive approach to her health. She has made specific lifestyle changes, including opting for nonalcoholic beer. “Our mindsets, the stories we tell ourselves, become our realities,” she noted. “Find the tool kits that you need to move forward.”

The bike accident occurred in July 2022, when Grant was knocked unconscious after hitting a pothole while riding near her home in Nashville, Tennessee. Earlier this year, she spoke about the arduous journey of relearning to sing following her accident, compounded by the discovery of a cyst in her throat.

Grant shared her experience with E! News in February, revealing that the trauma from the fall caused an existing cyst in her throat to grow excessively, necessitating surgery. “I had this five-hour surgery and they took it out. So I actually had to learn to sing again,” she recounted. Although doctors offered to perform a facelift during the procedure, she chose to decline that option. However, upon waking up after the surgery, she noticed that her “neck was a little tighter.”

“I just felt like an old, beat-up car that went in and got a paint job and had the dents knocked out,” she reflected on the surgery. “That’s a gift.”

The aftermath of the accident has resulted in lingering issues, particularly affecting her short-term memory and balance. “I can’t remember what I can’t remember,” she admitted, adding a touch of humor to her struggles. “Sometimes I walk around like I’m drunk and I just have to laugh about all of it.”

While her journey has been marked by challenges, Grant’s resilience and optimistic perspective shine through. She continues to inspire others with her story of recovery and self-discovery in the wake of life-altering events.
