Analysis of Aliens Fireteam Elite, an orgy of bullets and xenomorphs

In 1986 Jame Cameron gave us the sequel to Alien, a film loved and valued by fans of the saga, but distant in tone from the initial work of Ridley Scott. The second part responded to that of more and better. The plural in its title was totally intentional, from the presence of a single being capable of sowing terror in an entire crew, we began to glimpse swarms of xenomorphs destined to face an elite squad of the Colonial Infantry Navy. Bullets, lots of aliens, flamethrowers and cool phrases, that was the spirit. And that’s the starting point of Aliens: Fireteam Elite, a video game in which, as with the film, the ending has a lot to say.

Continuity in fiction and a quick and direct proposal

Aliens: Fireteam Elite It was introduced not so long ago and, I would say, almost treacherously. The title, developed by Cold Iron Studios, means the first job of the developer, and the initial contact can back off more than one. But do not run so much, that although it does not seem like it, there are little things to scratch.

From the outset, you have to be very clear about what exactly the title proposes. We stand before a cooperative online multiplayer that starts from the idea that Left 4 Dead explored at the time and adapts it to the fiction of Alien, but taking as a reference the sequel to the original work and distancing itself as much as possible, and more, from interpretations such as that of Alien: Insolation. Like the game of The Creative Assembly he was looking at “The Eighth Passenger”, the one in question today looks at the James Cameron tape to set his tone.

The title places us 23 years after the original film trilogy. We play a colonial marine who serves aboard the USS Endeavour, a space cruiser that has just come to a rescue call issued from the outer colonies. This is the starting point of a campaign that is divided into four missions with three phases each. The background is as careful as the exquisite setting of the game, who professes an unconditional love for the universe in which it is based, something that will captivate fans of the saga. The problem is that the way of transferring the story to the player can be a bit cold. In this sense, the online video game component, the fast and direct action governs the structure, relegating the information related to the plot to conversations with the NPCs that, despite having dubbing, take place on a flat screen and without the usual animations. for such needs.

The title plays well with light and claustrophobic environments, making the setting one of its main virtues.

That, which in the first instance can clash, and which makes the secondary role of the plot clear from the beginning, responds to a clear intention: to start shooting as quickly as possible, and the more, the better. So after going through the hangar of the main ship, talking to the different characters, locating the armory and making a small mental map of how the game works, we will descend to our first mission.

An atmosphere that will delight the fan and a cyclical rhythm that can get tired

The correctness of the setting and the taste for detail help us to enter into what we want to propose. The stickers of the weapons, the language used, the tone of the game, the music, the sound of the weapons and xenomorphs, the poses of the characters, everything is powerfully reminiscent of Aliens: The Return. The setting generates a smile so marked that it only begins to fade when upon entering the third mission we verify that the development of each of them responds to an almost mimetic structure, with a series of hordes that more or less always respond to the same number and intensity. Repetition and repetition quickly become the norm on every mission. Fortunately, when changing the objective the variety makes an appearance.

The proposal starts from what was seen in the James Cameron film, but broadens its spectrum to provide references from the entire Alien universe.

As a rule, stage design accompanies, and despite the simplicity that so much distills its gameplay as the construction of the world we move through, the more I played the easier it became for me to enjoy what the title proposed to me. There two factors decisively intervene: the first of them is the immediacy and simplicity of his proposal, and the second is how well adjusted are both the progression of the player and the challenge that we must face. From its simplicity emanates an incredibly easy gameplay to take on, both at a mechanical and management level. We will have to choose between one of the three classes available at the beginning and, with the passage of the games, in addition to improving and selecting our weapons, we will configure the performance of our character’s personal skills. There, flexibility in the configuration of both our class and its weapons is greatly appreciated. And on the other hand, the challenge is so well adjusted that the game manages to generate tense situations with some assiduity, something that helps a lot to keep us glued to the command.

Now, repeating the formula can do you a lot of harm. It is difficult not to think of a similar game, but with the ability to risk more in the establishment of objectives and the development of the missions. Well, although at first it may not seem like it, there are a few good ideas in Aliens Fireteam, and every time the title gets out of hand, it brings joy to the player. We see this with the first appearances of altered species, with the inclusion of synthetics or with the behavior of the eggs, which only open if we approach abruptly, something that the game takes advantage of to generate tension forcing us to pass between them to the same as the xenomorphs stalking us, an example of how to link mechanics and fiction in an online game.

Winks are a constant during all scenarios.

Unfortunately, these flashes do not go away, and they only remain there, relegating the news to a series of enemies that appear for the first time in each of the four parts into which the campaign is divided, and generating a sense of repetition. hard to avoid. The good news? That repetition is part of the essence of the title, and its gameplay, despite not being revolutionary, is satisfactory and functional, making the final experience something much more enjoyable than you might expect at first.

A low-profile video game that knows how to play its cards right to win

Its successful difficulty (playing in normal) means that finishing the most demanding hordes with hardly any ammunition, or begging for a partner to revive you, can become normal with relative ease, which adds an extra tension to the final moments that feels great. In fact, both with synthetics (bots controlled by the machine) and with strangers in our team, the proposal is so simple that it does not leave many cracks. So it is presented as a perfect proposal to play with friends, since it is quite accessible and does not ask you to spend hundreds of hours to be able to follow the level of the community, differing in that aspect from many titles of the style.

It works? Yes, and it can come as a surprise despite how coarse it seems at the beginning. He does it with strangers, but with friends it really turns out to be a real treat. The biggest problem of Aliens: Fireteam Elite is that, despite having a very elaborate setting (in which you can find details that exude a reverential respect for the cinematographic universe anywhere), a decent gunplay, a good progression and great accessibility, the repetitive rhythm that your proposal sets can become excessively monotonous. Something to which should be added a template of an online game model as predictable as the hordes of enemies. There is little room for surprise, and that never helps.

Even so, the game achieves moments of great tension, which invite us to collaborate and be attentive to the skills, the management of the turrets and the different gadgets that we are obtaining, to be able to get out of the continuous orgy of bullets and xenomorphs that ends up being the title. Aliens Fireteam Elite is like a well-resolved fast food dish, like a bar burger without pretense that ends up surprising you despite its simplicity. Simplicity is his greatest virtue, but also his greatest defect, since it prevents him from further developing the good ideas he puts on the table. In spite of everything, I dare say that the fans of the saga are in luck. Yes, it is a low profile title, but he knows how to play his cards very well. If someone is thinking of a sequel, something very interesting can be built from this foundation.
