Fonts, icons, sliders and buttons – everything looks bulkier than before. With Android 12, Google has carried out the most extensive change of scenery since 2014.

With the new look “Material You”, Google wants to simplify the operation. Instead, the quicksetting buttons in the notification bar grow into larger, colored tiles. This is reminiscent of the look of iOS. Since fewer buttons fit on the screen, you have to swipe through the rows of tiles. If you sort the tile arrangement according to importance, you will get along well with it after a short time.

Linked smart home components, such as smart lamps, can be operated via one of the tiles. Another new tile houses the payment method selection for Google Pay. Up to now, these two functions were in the so-called power menu, which was reached by pressing the power button. According to Google, this was not so well received by users, which is why the power menu is returning to its roots: If you now hold the button, large, round buttons appear with which you can lock the phone, switch it off, restart it or dial the emergency call . In everyday life we found the new approach more consistent. We also liked that the slide controls for brightness and volume have become significantly wider and therefore feel less fiddly.
