Succession leads race for Emmys threatened by strike threats

HBO drama series Succession leads the race for the Emmys, despite the threat of an actors’ strike that could bring Hollywood to a near standstill. The show garnered 27 nominations, making it the top contender for the 75th annual awards.

Succession dominates nominations

For the second year in a row, Succession is competing for best dramatic series and has secured three out of the six nominations for best actor in a dramatic series. Brian Cox, Kieran Culkin, and Jeremy Strong are vying for the coveted award.

The Last of Us adaptation receives recognition

HBO’s adaptation of the zombie apocalypse video game The Last of Us is the second favorite, receiving 24 nominations, including best drama series and best actor. Pedro Pascal, the first Latino to be nominated in this category since 1999, is among the contenders.

The White Lotus and Ted Lasso stand out

HBO’s satire series The White Lotus earned 23 nominations and Ted Lasso, the Apple TV+ comedy, received 21 nominations. Both shows have been recognized for their outstanding performances.

Merlina and other noteworthy nominations

Netflix’s series Merlina, a spin-off focusing on the daughter of the Adams Family, has been nominated in 12 categories. Jenna Ortega, the show’s lead actress, is the first Latina to receive a nomination for best comedy actress since 2008. Other notable nominations include Guillermo del Toro’s “Curiosities” with seven nominations and Diego Luna’s “Andor” with eight nominations.

Strike threatens the Emmys

The 75th Emmy Awards ceremony, scheduled for September 18, is under threat due to ongoing strike negotiations in Hollywood. Scriptwriters have been picketing for over two months, and the Screen Actors Guild (SAG-AFTRA) could go on strike if a contractual agreement is not reached with the studios. The situation is so severe that the ceremony may need to be postponed.
