Apple should now be the most profitable company in the world. This emerges from the Fortune 500 list just published by the business magazine of the same name. According to the calculations, Apple managed to bring in a total of 57.4 billion US dollars in profits (Fiscal year 2020) in the reporting period.

That is significantly more than the second-placed candidate, the oil company Saudi Aramco (49.2 billion). The communications and holding company SoftBank Group from Japan (47 billion), the ICBC Bank from China (45 billion) and Microsoft (44.2 billion) follow in third to fifth place. Apple has a bigger leap in profit behind it: In the last list, Apple was still in third place among the most profitable companies worldwide.

The Fortune 500 is actually based on sales, not profit. But here, too, Apple was able to fight its way forward. While the iPhone manufacturer was 12th in the previous year, it has now climbed to 6th place with $ 274.5 billion. The undisputed leader is the supermarket group Walmart with almost 560 billion, followed by the Chinese energy company State Grid (386.6 billion). In third place is the e-commerce group Amazon (386 billion), followed by China National Petroleum and Sinopec (283.9 and 283.7 billion, both oil and gas companies from China).

Other large tech companies are also relatively high on the profit list. These are – in addition to the mentioned Microsoft in 5th place – the Google parent Alphabet (rank 7, 40 billion dollar profit), Facebook (rank 10, 29.1 billion) and Amazon (rank 16, 21.3 billion). However, Apple manages to combine high sales with high profits.

Apple has never made so much revenue in a fiscal year. Apple shares rose 80.7 percent in 2020. The pandemic initially caused difficulties for Apple, but the company quickly managed to defy the crisis. However, there are currently delivery problems with certain products, as Apple’s CFO Luca Maestri had already announced.
