Thirteen years have passed since the release of the first Avatar movie, and Disney has just announced the title of the sequel and the release date of the first trailer. To help you best prepare for the film’s release this year, here’s everything we know so far about Avatar 2.
The Avatar sequel isn’t called Avatar 2, although that’s what many have called the movie for years. It’s officially called Avatar: The Way of the Water, Disney announced at CinemaCon 2022.
The plot of James Cameron’s Avatar sequel is vague to say the least, although we know that they will be basically humans trying to extract a rare metal, unobtanium, from the planet Pandora.
If you don’t remember the original Avatar, the sequel will still star Sam Worthington as Jake Sully, a former Marine who takes on the role of an Avatar, allowing him to be in the body of one of the Native Na’vi. Sully is an Earth spy among the Na’vi on Pandora, but he falls in love with one of them, Neytiri, played by Zoë Saldana, and he must eventually go against his own people.
Sully and Neytiri are both ready to return for the next install of the franchise.
Avatar 2: Release Date
- Theatrical release date: December 16, 2022.
The long-delayed sequel to Avatar is currently scheduled for release in the U.S. on December 16, 2022.
Preliminary filming of the film began in 2017, and filming did not end until late September 2020. After that, the film’s theatrical release was postponed eight times. Disney is currently developing three more sequels — Avatar 3, 4, and 5 — that are expected to be released, respectively, on December 20, 2024, December 18, 2026, and December 22, 2028 — if they’re not affected by delays.
Here is the official synopsis of Avatar: The Way of the Water:
“Set more than a decade after the events of the first film, Avatar: The Way of the Water begins to tell the story of the Sully family (Jake, Neytiri and their children), the problems that follow them, the efforts they make to protect each other, the battles they fight to stay alive and the tragedies they endure.”
Here is the official logline of Avatar: The Way of the Water:
“Jake Sully and Ney’tiri have formed a family and are doing everything to stay together. However, they must leave their homes and explore the regions of Pandora. When an ancient threat resurfaces, Jake must wage a difficult war against humans.”
Avatar 2: where to stream it
- Where: Expect it to arrive on Disney+ after its theatrical release.
- When: Maybe late January 2023 or early February 2023.
Over the past two years, Disney has released a handful of movies on Disney+ after their exclusive 45-day release window ended. While the studio hasn’t officially committed to a streaming release date for Avatar: The Way of Water, it seems likely that it will have at least 45 days of theatrical exclusivity, meaning it could arrive on Disney+ by February 2023.
Avatar 2: Trailers
Disney has promised that the first teaser trailer will arrive at the same time as Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, which premieres on May 6, 2022. Pocket-lint will keep you updated as soon as it goes live.
Avatar 2: the cast and crew
