Futbol Club Barcelona will be eager to prove to everyone that they are better than rivals Bayern Munich when the two teams meet in their Champions League matchup on Wednesday, the Blaugrana coach said Xavi Hernandez.
Barcelona were beaten 2-0 by Bayern in the match between the teams last month, a result that Xavi said did not accurately reflect the talent of his team.
But having won just one of their four games in Europe this season, Xavi wants his team to show their true worth at the Camp Nou on Wednesday.
“We have to show with play and victories that Munich was a football misfortune. We have to show tomorrow that we can be at the level of this type of team,” Xavi said at a press conference on Tuesday.
“I think we were very good in Munich despite the result, which was very bad.”
Despite Barcelona having more possession than Bayern and outshooting them 18-13, the German team scored twice in four minutes against the development of play to secure the win.
Barça’s poor results in the competition have left them in danger of being eliminated in their initial phase, as they are third in the Group C standings with four points, eight behind leaders Bayern and three behind second-placed , Inter Milan, with two games to play.
Inter host bottom club Viktoria Plzen, who are yet to pick up a point, in the other group game on Wednesday.
If the Italians win, they would qualify for the round of 16 and eliminate Barça thanks to a better record in their crosses. Bayern have already secured their place in the next round.
“We have to follow the path of showing that we can compete against this type of rival, regardless of what happens in Milan,” said Xavi.
“I don’t like to talk about miracles… we have a little hope. Although we are in a very uncomfortable situation.
“(…) We have a little hope. We are in a very uncomfortable situation. There are many numbers so that we do not pass.”
Barcelona, who also fell out of the tournament after the group stage last season, suffered another setback when they lost 3-1 to Real Madrid in the Clasico this month.
Xavi said that he and his players will watch the Inter game together in the dressing room, but he refused to send a message to the Viktoria Plzen players before the game.
