The Biden administration has unveiled an additional $375 million in security assistance for Ukraine, marking a significant enhancement in military support. This latest package, as confirmed by a U.S. defense official, will, for the first time, include American Joint Standoff Weapon (JSOW) glide bombs.
These advanced bombs are compatible with Ukraine’s recently acquired F-16 fighters. JSOW glide bombs feature retractable wings, enabling them to strike targets located as far as 70 miles away. Among the different versions of JSOW, the ones being sent to Ukraine are specifically outfitted with cluster munitions.
In conjunction with this package, the U.S. is also expected to announce over $2 billion in aid for Ukraine through the Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative (USAI). Unlike the recent $350 million package—which depletes existing American stockpiles—USAI funding is aimed at securing new contracts for assistance. However, this approach often entails a waiting period that can stretch from months to years before the aid is realized. The forthcoming USAI funds are primarily targeted at replenishing Ukraine’s stock of munitions.
This commitment to military support comes as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy visits the United States. During his stay, he has been actively advocating for global support, including a speech at the United Nations General Assembly in New York on Wednesday. Following this, he plans to present his so-called “victory plan” to President Joe Biden at the White House.
Zelenskyy outlined the essence of this “plan for victory” during an interview with “Good Morning America,” emphasizing the importance of bolstering Ukraine’s defense capabilities. “The plan of victory is the strengthening of Ukraine,” Zelenskyy stated. “That’s why we’re asking our friends and allies to strengthen us. It’s very important.”
While specifics regarding the victory plan have not been publicly disclosed, Zelenskyy indicated that it contains particular military supply requests and suggestions for security guarantees for Ukraine post-conflict. His chief of staff further revealed this plan includes an invitation for Ukraine to join NATO.
A source close to the Ukrainian president elaborated that the plan is structured around five main points. Four of these points are intended for immediate implementation, while one will be addressed following the conclusion of the war. Additionally, the proposal details specific figures and amounts of military support required.
Interestingly, former President Donald Trump recently remarked that he would “probably” meet with Zelenskyy. However, sources suggest that such a meeting is now unlikely to occur.
This financial and military commitment from the U.S. underscores the ongoing support for Ukraine in the face of ongoing conflicts, aligning with President Zelenskyy’s efforts to secure comprehensive assistance from global allies.
As tensions persist and Ukraine continues to navigate its defense needs, these initiatives aim to fortify the nation’s military readiness and strategic capabilities in the evolving landscape of international relations.
