Bowen Yang Reveals a Male ‘SNL’ Host Made Cast Members Cry Over Ideas

Without naming names, “Saturday Night Live” star Bowen Yang has disclosed that a male host once made “multiple cast members cry” during a table read for the sketch comedy show due to his dissatisfaction with the ideas being presented for his episode. Yang, who joined “SNL” in September 2018, shared this incident while appearing on “Watch What Happens Live.” Describing the experience as “terrible,” Yang said, “This man who… this person, this host made multiple cast members cry on Wednesday during the, before the table-read, because he hated the ideas.”

During the interview, Yang was also asked about his biggest “SNL” sketch bomb. Recalling a sketch planned for host Ayo Edebiri last season, he explained, “We wrote a live sketch where it took place in an elevator, and she and I were, like, telling everyone that we should all make out or something because the elevator got stuck. Then, for some reason, it got turned into a pre-tape under our noses, and we had to adapt to that…It just didn’t go as well as I had hoped.”

Despite the setback, Yang maintained a positive outlook, stating, “And you just deal with it. Comedy’s subjective, you never know how it’s gonna play in front of a specific audience. But it’s fine, you let it roll off your back.”

Since joining “Saturday Night Live,” Bowen Yang has received four Emmy nominations, three of which have been in the Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series category. He is once again nominated in that category for 2024.

Yang’s forthcoming return to “SNL” is highly anticipated, with the show set to celebrate its 50th season on NBC this fall.
