From very early, rivers of people emerge from the heart of Iztapalapa, a municipality of Mexico City that until a few weeks ago was on the list of the 15 most violent in the country.

In this area of difficult access, people not only travel by bus or subway, now they use the recently inaugurated Line 2 of the Cablebús, inspired by the Mi Teleférico system built by Evo Morales in Bolivia.

Neighbors describe it as a “great” transportation option, as it significantly shortens travel times. And they also stand out that it gives them safety and comfort.

Ecology and safety

This is the second cable car line built by the capital’s government, which seeks three main objectives: reduce travel times, facilitate mobility in the area and lower polluting emissions from transport.

In fact, with the operation of the two cable car lines, more than 16,000 tons of carbon dioxide per year.

In the words of the deputy director of Planning and Policies of the Ministry of Mobility of Mexico City, Rodrigo Díaz, “it is also a project to rescue public spaces, it is a security project at the neighborhood level; it is a project that, in general, brings the city closer and dignifies the trip. “

Urban art and mountain landscape

Within weeks of its entry into operation, it achieved the Guinness record as the longest cable car line in the world dedicated to public transport.

Cablebus Line 2 uses 305 cabins that transport daily near 50,000 people. Each of the cabins can carry up to 10 passengers at once.

Many people not only use it for transportation, but to spend time with family and appreciate the mountains of the Sierra de Santa Catarina as they have never done before.

Incentivize the economy

The Cablebus also brought development to the area. A market with the same name was installed under the Desarrollo Urbano Quetzalcóatl station, which has 150 locales and will benefit the economy of 600 people directly and 5,000 neighbors neighboring to this point.

After the pandemic crisis, some families found a source of income in this market.

According to the authorities, income is estimated for $ 115.4 million During the first year of operation of the cable car, the creation of 1,475 economic units and the generation of 4,200 jobs in this demarcation.

Return of the State

“It is a project that reduces inequalities and has one very important thing: it made the State reach areas where it had been absent for years,” says Rodrigo Díaz.

And, although Mexico is more than a decade late in using this transport compared to other Latin American countries, the authorities have advanced that the expansion of the cable car in the capital is already being considered.

Well, the true value for users is the impact on their life and their social context, which translates into mobilizing in a modern, efficient and safe way.
