Amazon recently faced backlash from its employees following the announcement of a new policy mandating that corporate staff must return to the office five days a week. This decision has generated a flurry of discontent on the company’s internal Slack channels, where workers openly expressed their dissatisfaction.
One employee, visibly distressed by the new mandate, directed a message to Business Insider, which has been closely following Amazon’s return-to-office developments. The individual challenged CEO Andy Jassy’s assertion that this policy merely reflects a return to pre-pandemic operations. According to the employee, the new requirements are significantly more stringent than what many teams experienced prior to COVID-19. “It’s just going backwards,” they argued.
As the Slack channel dedicated to return-to-office discussions became inundated with comments, it became clear that many employees shared similar frustrations. One worker posted, “Whatever happened to ‘Striving to be Earth’s Best Employer,’” referencing one of Amazon’s renowned leadership principles.
Amazon has long had a reputation for being a demanding workplace, especially when compared to other major tech companies like Google. The company’s return-to-office policy had already been tough, but Jassy has taken it a step further. One employee even humorously suggested negotiating a performance improvement plan (PIP), expressing a desire to leave the company in the face of such intense requirements.
Another worker added a sarcastic remark regarding the impracticalities of the new arrangement, implying that if employees are expected at the office five days a week, then they should no longer need to bring their laptops home.
In July, Amazon enforced a “return-to-hub” directive requiring employees to work from designated team hubs rather than any office close to their residence. Those who refuse to comply are faced with the possibility of reassignment to different teams or, in some cases, voluntary resignation. This strict regulation indicates that non-compliance would be treated as an indication that an employee has chosen to quit their job.
One employee took to Slack to highlight that it has been “day 1169” since Jassy assumed the role of CEO on July 5, 2021. This remark was a nod to founder Jeff Bezos’s philosophy of maintaining a “Day 1” mindset at Amazon, emphasizing the need for the company to remain curious, innovative, and adaptable. In contrast, a “Day 2” mentality, according to Bezos, leads to stagnation and decline.
As this situation continues to unfold, it remains to be seen how Amazon will address the grievances of its workforce. The chants for a more flexible work environment reflect a broader trend seen across various sectors as many employees seek to redefine their work-life balance in the post-pandemic world. The company’s hardline stance may lead to further unrest and increased turnover in the long run.
