Can I Renew My Passport Online? Yes, If You Meet These Criteria.

Renewing a U.S. passport has become significantly easier with the recent rollout of online passport renewal services by the State Department. This feature became available nationwide on Wednesday after undergoing limited beta testing.

The State Department’s Consular Affairs emphasized the convenience of this new option, stating, “You can skip the printing and mailing. Renew from the comfort of your home (couch!) completely online, 24/7. It’s secure, convenient, and ready for you to use.”

However, not every American can take advantage of this online renewal option. Several specific requirements must be met to qualify.

To apply online, applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Be at least 25 years old.
  • Reside in a U.S. state or territory.
  • Hold an existing passport that was valid for 10 years and issued between 2009 and 2015, or has been valid for more than 9 years but less than 15 years from the new application date. The passport must still be in the applicant’s possession, undamaged, and not reported lost or stolen.
  • Be renewing a regular tourist passport.
  • Have the ability to upload a digital passport photo.
  • Pay the renewal fee online, via credit or debit card.
  • Not have plans to travel internationally for at least 8 weeks from the application date. It is important to note that existing passports will be canceled while the renewal process is underway.

The cost of renewing a passport online is consistent with the mail-in renewal fee, set at $130 for a passport book with standard shipping.

Those eager to obtain a European stamp in their passport should act promptly as time is of the essence.

Regarding processing times, during the beta period, some online renewals were completed in as little as a few weeks. However, Deputy Secretary of State Richard Verma mentioned on Tuesday that applicants should not expect all renewals to be processed faster than traditional methods. As of Wednesday, processing times for both online and mail-in renewals were estimated to be between six to eight weeks, according to information from the State Department’s website.

While the new online renewal option offers a welcome convenience for many, travelers should ensure they meet all the eligibility requirements and factor in the processing time when planning their next international trip.
