Catalonia receives a new proposal to expand El Prat on the sea

The Government of Catalonia has received a new proposal to expand the airport of El Prat in which the construction of a runway over the sea, one mile from the coast, 3,400 meters long, which would involve the investment of about 2,100 million euros.

Sources from the Department of Territory have confirmed to EFE that, as La Vanguardia publishes today, the Government has received this new project to expand airport facilities.

The expansion of the airport is one of the projects that the Generalitat must study according to the content of the recent agreement reached between the Government and the PSC to approve the 2023 budgets.

The project, of private initiative, proposes to build the runway of 3,400 meters long with capacity for long radio aircraft on ten-meter-high pylons and without a satellite terminal, which would be connected to the existing ones with a platform.

This project, presented by a consultancy and led by the engineer Joaquim Coello, would imply that the airport could be expanded without invading the La Ricarda reserve, included in the European Natura 2000 network. The plan exceeds by more than 400 million the cost of the initial expansion project proposed by AENA (BME:AENA), which is 1.700 billion.

The aforementioned sources of the Department of Territory have specified to EFE that this proposal is added to others that the Government has received from various entities, such as the employers of small and medium enterprises of Catalonia (Pimec) and Foment, to expand the airport and that “all will be studied”.

“We are happy that civil society has sent us their proposals. But now what it is time to do is create the technical commission that should study them,” they added.
