In a recent update, Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert revealed that he has been diagnosed with a high right ankle sprain. As the Chargers prepare for their upcoming game against the Pittsburgh Steelers, Herbert’s status remains uncertain.
Speaking to reporters, Herbert acknowledged that the pain in his ankle is significant. He appeared with a noticeable limp after his news conference, illustrating the impact of the injury.
“Thankfully, it’s only Friday,” Herbert commented. “It is what it is. It’s all about getting treatment and making sure that it’s at its best. I’m doing everything I can to limit the swelling and pain while moving forward.”
The Chargers have listed Herbert as questionable for Sunday’s game. He did not participate in practice on both Wednesday and Friday, and was limited on Thursday, which raises concerns about his availability.
Head coach John Harbaugh clarified that Herbert’s missed practice on Friday should not be viewed as a setback in his recovery process. It is part of a pre-planned approach by the team’s athletic training staff.
“Every day, it’s been getting better,” Herbert stated. “It’s just getting it to a point where you feel comfortable going out there and being able to move.” This optimism indicates his commitment to rehabilitation despite the setback.
Earlier in the week, Harbaugh mentioned that if Herbert is unable to play, quarterback Easton Stick would take the reins as the starter. However, on Friday, Harbaugh hesitated to confirm this, stating, “Until I really know exactly what Justin’s status is, I’m not going to reveal any contingencies.”
The injury occurred during the third quarter of last Sunday’s game against the Carolina Panthers, where the Chargers won decisively with a score of 26-3. Herbert was attempting to escape the pocket when linebacker DJ Johnson brought him down from behind, and he was struck face-first by defensive end Jayden Peevy, resulting in his ankle being trapped underneath Johnson.
Although he was evaluated in a medical tent, Herbert impressively managed to finish the game without missing a snap. Postgame, however, he was seen walking with a considerable limp, an indication of the injury’s severity.
This recent ankle sprain marks the second injury Herbert has faced this season. Earlier, during training camp, he dealt with a plantar fascia issue that required him to wear a walking boot for two weeks. Despite this earlier setback, Herbert assured that he has since recovered.
Despite these challenges, Herbert has been recognized as one of the most durable quarterbacks in the NFL throughout his first four seasons. He had a streak of 62 consecutive starts, the second-longest among active quarterbacks, before a fractured right index finger ended his season in Week 14 last year. The struggles of Easton Stick during the final four games without Herbert further highlight his significance to the team.
Herbert reflected on the challenges injuries pose, stating, “Injuries are unfortunately a part of the game, and you have to do everything you can to limit those. Complaining and worrying about it isn’t going to help very much.” His determination to stay positive and focused on recovery is commendable and indicative of his character as a professional athlete.
