Charlie Cox Thought Vincent D’Onofrio Was ‘Delusional’ About Marvel Rehire

Vincent D’Onofrio never gave up hope of returning to “Daredevil,” as revealed by his co-star Charlie Cox. Both actors were essential parts of Netflix’s Marvel series, which ran for four years, focusing on street-level superheroes like Daredevil and Jessica Jones. The collaboration between Disney and Marvel started with “Daredevil” season one in 2015, featuring Cox as Daredevil and D’Onofrio as Kingpin.

The partnership between Disney and Netflix ended in 2018, resulting in the cancellation of ‘Daredevil’ and other Marvel shows. Fans remained optimistic that these characters might get a second chance in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) as Disney prepared to launch its streaming service. However, Cox revealed during the D23 event that he didn’t expect to be asked back for the role.

“I think that we stopped shooting the original show at the end of 2016, beginning of 2018 and found out it was canceled somewhere in that period. And then it wasn’t until midway through 2020 that we got a phone call from Kevin saying that they were interested in bringing the characters back,” Cox said, referring to Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige.

After this call, Cox and the rest of the cast didn’t hear from Marvel for a long time, leading Cox to believe that a “Daredevil” reboot was entirely off the table. “I’d moved on, and occasionally Vincent and I would chat, and he would say things like, ‘Oh, they’re going to call. I think they’re going to call us,'” Cox stated. “And I would get off the phone and be like, ‘The guy’s delusional! He’s got to let it go. It’s going to be 10 years, and he’s still going. It’s over. It’s definitely over.”

D’Onofrio, who was also at the D23 event, added: “It became really pathetic in Charlie’s eyes.” But in the end, D’Onofrio was right.

In November 2021, D’Onofrio reprised his role as Kingpin in the “Hawkeye” Disney+ series. Just a few weeks later, Cox returned as Matt Murdock, the lawyer behind the Daredevil mask, in the “Spider-Man: No Way Home” movie. In 2022, Marvel announced that Cox would lead a new Disney+ series, “Daredevil: Born Again,” giving fans hope that the gritty essence of the Netflix Marvel universe might make its way into the MCU.

“He was right. I didn’t see it. For me, it was shocking. Shocking. It was a great show and been silly for love,” Cox admitted.

Reports from D23 suggest that “Daredevil: Born Again,” set to premiere in March 2025, will pick up where the Netflix series left off. The new show will feature the main cast from the original series, including D’Onofrio, Jon Bernthal, Wilson Bethel, Elden Henson, and Deborah Ann Woll.
