A representative of China’s immigration office said on Friday that 1.35 million people have applied for passports and visas for Hong Kong and Macau since Jan. 8, when the country opened its borders after three years.

“The number of applications for entry and exit documents will continue to increase steadily in the near future. The National Immigration Administration will dynamically adjust the measures of the management service to provide the necessary comfort for applicants to travel smoothly,” Liu Haitao, director-general of the Department of Border Inspection and Management under China’s National Immigration Administration, told a news conference.
