China confirmed a case of human infection with the H5N6 strain of bird flu in Sichuan province, collects Reuters citing information from Chinese media.

The infected is a 55-year-old man and is currently hospitalized in the city of Bazhong. The channel CGTN reported that the patient showed symptoms of fever on June 30 and tested positive for the virus on July 6.

Local authorities activated an emergency response and slaughtered poultry in the area. According to experts, the infection was an occasional case and “the risk of an invisible epidemic is extremely low.”

The H5N6 virus is one of several potentially dangerous versions of the flu, which was first detected eight years ago in Laos and later spread to China and other countries. As of last week, 32 confirmed cases of human infection with the H5N6 virus and 19 deaths had been reported to the World Health Organization in Asia since 2014.

In June, the Chinese National Health Commission reported the detection of the world’s first case of H10N3 bird flu in humans in the eastern province of Jiangsu. The Commission concluded that H10N3 is a low pathogenic strain of the poultry virus that “does not have the ability to effectively infect humans”, so the risk of it spreading on a large scale is “extremely low” .
