CO2 sensor: Raspberry Pi warns with a red LED if the air is bad

We show you how you can easily build such a measuring device yourself: The ventilation alarm with the Raspberry Pi indicates when the air quality drops below a critical level. The CO₂ content indoors is measured by a sensor. As soon as too much carbon dioxide has accumulated in the room air, a red LED lights up and gives a ventilation alarm. In addition, you can view the CO₂ data online and call it up with your smartphone.

The CO₂ content is a good indicator of air quality. The concentration of carbon dioxide outdoors is around 400 ppm. The unit ppm stands for parts per million, in this case there are 400 CO₂ molecules per million air molecules. This is only 0.04 percent, but it has a noticeable impact. Indoor concentration increases rapidly through human breathing. For example, several thousand ppm can quickly accumulate during a film showing in the cinema. This can impair concentration and cause tiredness and headaches. And in times of the corona pandemic, the risk of infection via aerosols increases rapidly if you do not ventilate.
