Colin Farrell will play The Penguin / Oswald Cobblepot in the rumored spin-off series dedicated to the character from the film The Batman, as reported by the medium Variety. The actor will appear in Matt Reeves’ The Batman movie as the Gotham villain. However, his participation as the character will be extended in this new series for HBO Max.
Earlier this fall it was reported that this spin-off was underway, but that Farrell had not officially signed on to continue playing the villain. Apparently, The series will follow The Penguin on his ascent into the criminal world of Gotham City. Variety has also noted that Lauren LeFranc is ready to write the script. The Batman director Matt Reeves and producer Dylan Clark will serve as executive producers on the series.
We remind you that Farrell himself pointed out that He only appears in “five or six scenes” of The Batman and pointed to his doubts about his role during the movie, praising Matt Reeves as director and Robert Pattinson as the new Batman.
While we still haven’t seen Farrell as the iconic villain, he has a huge stamp of approval. Danny DeVito, who played The Penguin in the movie Batman Returns From 1992, he’s excited to see Farrell’s take on the character: “I love Colin Farrell. He is one of my favorite actors. I can not wait“.
The Penguin series would be the second spin-off of The Batman movie. We already know that another one focused on the Gotham police is in development. In addition, the Batman universe has other series apart from The Batman such as Gotham, which follows James Gordon on his rise through the police force to the character we know today: Commissioner Gordon.
