Colombia raises threat level for deadly Nevado del Ruiz volcano

Geological Service Monitors Nevado del Ruíz Volcano Activity

On April 14, the Geological Service reported that the Nevado del Ruíz volcano exhibited seismic activity associated with rock fracturing inside the volcanic edifice. The level of activity remained consistent through the following day.

Location of Earthquakes

The earthquakes were primarily located in the eastern-northeastern and southwestern sectors of the volcano. Additionally, seismic events occurred in the Arenas crater at depths ranging between 0.5 and 4.5 km.

Magnitude Data

The maximum magnitude recorded was 0.8. It was associated with the earthquake at 12:49am located 1.1 km northeast of the crater at a depth of 3.6 km.

As the activity continues to be monitored, the Geological Service will provide updates on any changes or developments within the volcano.
