BOULDER, Colo. – The Colorado football team, led by head coach Deion Sanders, kicked off its season with a strong 3-1 record, including a thrilling 38-31 overtime victory against Baylor in wet conditions at home. The match showcased standout performances from Travis Hunter and quarterback Shedeur Sanders, keeping the excitement rolling for the Buffs.
As the game concluded, Colorado forced overtime with an incredible 43-yard touchdown pass that was executed in the nick of time. Quarterback Shedeur Sanders made a crucial play, rolling to his left and tossing the ball toward the end zone’s left corner. Receiver LaJohntay Wester made a remarkable catch, securing the ball against his body amidst the rainy conditions, which tied the game at 31-31 just as time expired.
Before this thrilling moment, the team faced a setback when Colorado receiver Will Sheppard dropped a potential touchdown pass in the end zone. However, Shedeur demonstrated poise as he propelled the Buffs forward, mapping out a 25-yard drive in seven plays during the overtime period. This drive culminated in a 1-yard touchdown run by freshman running back Micah Welch.
Baylor had a chance to respond in overtime, but running back Dominic Richardson’s ambitious leap at the goal line resulted in a fumble, thanks to a strong defensive play by Travis Hunter. Hunter’s timely intervention sealed the victory for Colorado and ignited celebrations among the home crowd, who rushed the field at Folsom Field after the win.
The Buffs’ quarterback, Shedeur Sanders, completed 25 of 41 attempted passes, accumulating 341 yards and two touchdowns. Hunter, who has been a dynamic force for the team, recorded seven catches for a total of 130 yards.
Throughout the game, the energy of the 52,794-strong crowd shifted drastically. The Buffs initially found themselves trailing 24-10 late in the second quarter, a lead built by Baylor through significant plays, including a 100-yard kickoff return for a touchdown by Jamaal Bell and a 45-yard rushing touchdown from Baylor quarterback Sawyer Robertson on a critical fourth-and-1 situation.
However, Colorado bounced back, turning the tide with a lengthy touchdown drive that began with just 50 seconds left in the half. Shedeur expertly evaded a sack and connected with receiver Omarion Miller, who remarkably split two defenders for a spectacular 58-yard touchdown, narrowing Baylor’s lead to 24-17. Although replays indicated Miller might have touched the ground before crossing the line, officials ruled it a touchdown, energizing the Buffs as they headed to halftime.
Things heated up in the third quarter as Colorado leveled the game at 24-24. An 80-yard touchdown drive was highlighted by Hunter, who showcased his athleticism with a 46-yard catch followed by a crucial 31-yard catch on third-and-15, pushing the Buffs deep into Baylor territory. Welch then capitalized with a 2-yard run to wrestle back momentum in favor of Colorado.
By the end of the third quarter, Hunter had already garnered five receptions totaling 122 yards, marking his fifth consecutive game with over 100 yards receiving. This impressive streak extended from the previous season, where he set a school record after achieving four straight games of similar performance.
Baylor retaliated, with the Bears regaining the lead with 5:43 left in the fourth quarter thanks to a stunning connection between Robertson and receiver Hal Presley. The 24-yard touchdown pass, executed while under pressure, highlighted the Bears’ determination as they pulled ahead 31-24.
The pressure escalated for Colorado after Baylor’s defense sacked Shedeur twice in quick succession, forcing a punting scenario from deep in their territory. The final moments were poised for drama as Colorado rallied back for yet another exciting finish.
This victory not only showcased the resilience and talent of the team but also elevated the excitement around the Colorado football program as they continue their season with hopes for even greater achievements.
