Configure Tor v3: Migrate Tor Hidden Services to protocol version 3

table of contents

When you talk about the Darknet, you usually mean the Tor network – a part of the Internet that conventional browsers and Google searches remain hidden. Here, data is encrypted several times and sent around the world in order to disguise the whereabouts and identity of the user. Originally developed for agents of secret services, journalists and activists, but also criminals, use the darknet to evade prosecution by regimes and law enforcement agencies.

But the Darknet also has its practical sides: Tor daemon and Tor Browser can find a way to the Darknet from almost any Internet connection, even if network connections are restricted to a few ports by a firewall. And you can safely operate a web server, a local data dump or other services via the Tor daemon; this even works in the hotel WLAN or with the home DSL router without the otherwise mandatory port sharing.

More about the Internet

Thanks to public Tor2Web gateways such as tor2web.to, such services can even be reached by anyone without Tor, you just have to know the onion domain name and append “tor2web.to” instead of “.onion”. But the Onion domain names now have to be exchanged, because the Tor network is now using a new, more secure protocol and will switch off old Onion services until mid-October 2021.
