Constantine 2: While the continuation of Constantine has been officially announced by one of the actors, we are already thinking about what we would like to see in this second instalment with Keanu Reeves!
Earlier this week, we learned that Constantine would certainly be entitled to a sequel with Keanu Reeves. Although the actor has yet to formalize his return, that hasn’t stopped the most loyal fans from imagining what this second instalment with the star of The Matrix could look like. Ideas that made us think about what we would like to see next. Between the comeback of the original cast, the arrival of new threats and the conservation of this horrific paw, it is certain that the feature film would then have all the cards in hand to once again seduce the unconditioned fans of the anti-hero. From new elements which already made the first film an original adaptation in the heroic cinematographic landscape and which we look forward to finding in Constantine 2!
A Horrific and Heroic Aspect
The film Constantine directed by Francis Lawrence had marked the spirits in 2005, in particular thanks to its horrific aspect. An element that made it an unprecedented creation in the heroic cinematographic landscape. The famous occultist and exorcist embodied by Keanu Reeves indeed travelled between the world of the living and that of the dead, the exploration of his gifts thus offering us grunge sequences, both fantastic and horrific. The arrival of Angela (Rachel Weisz) in hell, the duel of Constantine against Balthazar or the attack of the demons in the heart of Los Angeles are all scenes that gave the spectators chills and that we hope to find in the following. Given the technical advancements, it wouldn’t be difficult for the creative teams to offer fans a new dive into horror and the devil’s realm, especially since black films such as Joker in 2019 and soon Snyder Cut from Justice League demonstrated the appeal of fans to this kind of creation. Through an R-Rated classification, Constantine 2 could therefore not skimp on the horror-fantasy scenes. What to seduce the fans of the first hour!
The Return of The Original Casting
Constantine had been able to seduce fans of the anti-hero, in particular thanks to its cast, composed among others of Keanu Reeves, Rachel Weisz, Tilda Swinton, Djimon Hounsou, Shia LaBeouf or even Peter Stormare. If the latter has confirmed his return as Lucifer, it would not be surprising to find the entire cast in the sequel either. This would make it possible in particular to explore new narrative arcs, such as the romantic relationship between Angela and Constantine, the latter’s pact with Lucifer, the new life of Gabriel become human against his sandstone or the role of Chas Kramer, the latter now officiating in Paradise. These last two elements would be particularly interesting to observe, Gabriel being able to be a vengeful threat vis-a-vis Constantine. Indeed, the character played by Tilda Swinton in the first part could track down the exorcist since his descent on Earth, while Chas would once again serve as an ally. A partnership that will have something to recall with nostalgia the first part!
Lucifer as a Constantine’s Ally
In the first instalment, Lucifer and Constantine had a special relationship. A dynamic that could be more apprehended in the sequel and testify to a rather special connection between the characters, to the point that the latter are future allies. One could imagine that Keanu Reeves would ask Peter Stormare for a favour or conversely that the master of hell asks Constantine to help him in his fight against God. This would offer an unprecedented apprehension of the classic opposition between Heaven and Hell, between Good and Evil while reinventing divine mythology. As such God could be a harmful character that Constantine could fight with the help of the Devil. An idea that could appear unprecedented, Lucifer also using this link to observe the next sins of the exorcist of DC.
The Relationship of Angela and Constantine
One of the strengths of the first film Constantine was also the latter’s relationship with Angela played by Rachel Weisz. The opportunity to discover the first emotions of a romance, the character of Keanu Reeves having nevertheless sacrificed himself for that of his co-star. With Constantine 2, we could see how the link between the investigator and the exorcist has evolved in recent years, Angela has been able to take part in the latter’s activities since her experience in the first film. However, Rachel Weisz is expected in the coming months on the Marvel Universe side in Black Widow, rumoured to have her character, Melina, as Iron Maiden. Thus, his contract with the House of Ideas could complicate his return to Warner in the sequel. A news that should not delight fans if this were the case although the disappearance of Angela could be the trigger for the new adventures of Constantine. A new spring that would have something to seduce us and make the film a daring DC project.
