Closet AI: Using Language Models to Dress You Up

Have you ever wished you could have your own Cher Horowitz-style closet computer to choose outfits for you? Well, thanks to the rise of artificial intelligence (AI), that dream may now become a reality. In the movie “Clueless,” the computer was purely fictional, but today, AI has become increasingly popular and accessible.

One such example of AI is ChatGPT, an AI chatbot based on Large Language Models (LLM). It can respond conversationally to users by feeding on vast amounts of textual data such as books, articles, and conversations. So, how can ChatGPT help you with your fashion choices?

As a text-based AI, ChatGPT works by responding only to text-based questions. For example, if you asked what to wear to the office, it would suggest that women should wear dresses, blouse with dress pants or skirts, and modest, comfortable shoes, while men should wear suits and ties, or dress pants and shirts with a jacket. The more specific your questions are, the more specific ChatGPT’s responses become.

If you provided more information like your age, ChatGPT would suggest different outfits for you. A 21-year-old woman celebrating her birthday should wear a statement dress like a sequined mini dress, while a 29-year-old should try a chic jumpsuit. ChatGPT suggested that a 58-year-old woman should wear a classic knee-length dress with a print like polka dots or stripes to feel confident and elegant on her special day.

However, you may need to be more cautious when it comes to breaking fashion norms. For instance, ChatGPT advised against wearing a band t-shirt at work, as it sends the wrong message about professionalism. Similarly, it suggested avoiding white at a wedding as it is usually reserved for the bride.

When I asked ChatGPT about the best brand to wear, it responded that it had “no personal preferences or prejudices towards any particular brand.” However, it did provide some outfit suggestions, such as a black turtleneck, black dress pants, black ankle boots, and straight hair parted in the middle, similar to what Elizabeth Holmes, the Theranos founder, used to wear.

While ChatGPT may not provide a definitive answer to all your fashion queries, it can offer a few helpful suggestions. The implementation of AI to help us dress fashionably may be just the beginning of a future where technology and fashion come together.
