Covid increased in children but US schools remain open

(Bloomberg) – The United States has recorded nearly a million covid cases among students since the school year began last month. Some 2,000 schools across the country have had to close due to outbreaks, which can result from a single positive test. In California, at least two dozen cases in one school were related to an unvaccinated teacher reading aloud without a mask.

But even as the spread of the highly contagious delta variant among children under 18 years of age increases, some of the largest school districts are pledging to avoid returning to classes remotely. There is still at least a month to go before federal approval of vaccines for children under 12 years of age. That puts families and staff on edge, as they rely on a patchwork of precautions that vary from state to state — if they exist at all.
