Frisco, Texas – Dallas Cowboys tight end Jake Ferguson may still be on the field this Sunday against the New Orleans Saints, despite being diagnosed with a bone bruise and a minor sprain to the medial collateral ligament in his left knee, according to a source from ESPN.
Ferguson’s injury occurred during the Cowboys’ 33-17 win over the Cleveland Browns. After making a 2-yard catch in the third quarter, he landed awkwardly while trying to jump over linebacker Jordan Hicks, leading to immediate concern as he grabbed his knee and exited the game.
Following the incident, Ferguson was taken to the locker room and did not return to the game. Post-game reports indicated that although an MRI was necessary for a complete assessment, his anterior cruciate ligament remained intact after preliminary checks.
Early on Monday morning, Ferguson posted on X, expressing gratitude with the message, “God is good.”
In the game prior to his injury, Ferguson had managed to record three catches for a total of 15 yards. His performance last season was noteworthy—he accumulated 71 catches for 761 yards and five touchdowns, which earned him a Pro Bowl selection as a replacement.
Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott shared his relief following the game, stating, “I think we dodged a big one. Obviously, he has to get some X-rays [on Monday], but talking to him, he gave me a lot of confidence that he will be okay. He will be able to respond whether it is nothing or a couple of weeks.” Prescott emphasized Ferguson’s importance to the team, saying, “I cannot even think of what we would miss without him. His mentality, what he brings to the game, and how we’ve connected have been huge for us.” He expressed hope that Ferguson would be back on the field quickly.
If Ferguson is unable to play against the Saints or if his recovery takes longer than expected, the Cowboys could look to other options on their roster. Tight ends Luke Schoonmaker, a 2023 second-round draft pick, Brevyn Spann-Ford, and John Stephens Jr., who was inactive last Sunday due to a hamstring strain, are currently the remaining tight ends available. In the recent game, fullback Hunter Luepke also played a role as an on-the-line blocker, which further illustrates the team’s options in case of a Ferguson absence.
This group of tight ends has collectively notched 13 catches amounting to 101 yards throughout their careers, indicating that while the team has alternatives, they heavily rely on Ferguson’s experience and connection with Prescott.
