Havana, Jun 24 (EFE) .- Cuba confirmed this Thursday 1,880 new cases of covid-19, the second highest number of daily infections since the beginning of the pandemic in March of last year, according to the Ministry of Public Health (Minsap ).

The country has accumulated 174,789 positives and 1,209 deaths so far, 16 of them reported in the last day, Minsap reported in its daily report.

To detect today’s cases, among which there are 26 imported, 33,471 samples were processed.

35,371 people are admitted to Cuban hospitals and isolation centers: 9,486 active cases -47 critical and 97 serious-, 7,589 with suspicious symptoms and the rest under epidemiological surveillance.

By provinces, Havana, Camagüey (center-east) and Matanzas (west) concentrated the highest numbers of the day with 389, 272 and 186 positives, each.

In the territories at risk, including Havana, a health intervention study is being carried out with Abdala and Soberana 02, the two most advanced vaccine candidates against the coronavirus of the five developed by Cuba.

Both formulas await authorization for emergency use from the Cuban drug regulatory entity after showing an efficacy of 92.2% (Abdala) and 62% (Soberana 02) in the last phase of clinical trials, as announced by scientific institutions. responsible for its development.

For a vaccine candidate to be considered a vaccine, it must demonstrate an efficacy equal to or greater than 50%, in accordance with the provisions of the World Health Organization (WHO).

More than 2.2 million Cubans have received at least one dose of these formulas as part of clinical trials and intervention studies developed in parallel to the health one, according to official data.

Cuba is not part of the WHO Covax mechanism created for low- and middle-income countries to access vaccines, nor has it purchased them on the international market.
