The president of Cuba, Miguel Díaz-Canel, reported this Wednesday that given the increase in infections by covid-19 in the Caribbean island, the authorities have been forced to declare the outbreak as “community transmission”, in order to apply a new plan of measures while the vaccination campaign is being carried out.

The Minister of Public Health, José Portal Miranda, said recently that in view of “the complex actions that are carried out to guarantee health intervention,” also “discipline and responsibility are essential ” assumed by health personnel and the population.
“The joy that the efficacy results obtained by our vaccine candidates, Soberana 02 and Abdala mean for Cuba, rather than trusting ourselves in daily action, constitute a challenge to be more careful and responsibly accompany the efforts made by Cuban science to defend life, “said Portal Miranda.
Vaccine candidates and the current situation
Last week, the Center for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (CIGB) and the Finlay Vaccine Institute (IFV), which develop the Abdala and Soberana 02 vaccines, respectively, reported the first results obtained from the third phase of testing of both candidates.
The CIGB detailed that Abdala has shown an effectiveness of 92.28% after three doses; while the IFV said that Sovereign 02 It offers, until the second injection, a protection of 62%, in the absence of the application of the third dose that will give its final effectiveness.
In recent days, Cuba has registered record numbers of infections. The worst was confirmed on June 28th, when the health authorities detected 3,080 new cases of coronavirus.
The most recent data reported by the Cuban authorities were detailed this Wednesday and correspond to the previous day, June 29. On that day there were 2,970 infections, for a accumulated 190,993 with 15,502 active cases, 77 critically ill patients, 112 seriously ill patients and 1,284 deaths since the pandemic began in 2020.
