Destiny 2 Lightfall is the fifth edition of Bungie’s looter-shooter which takes place in the neon-soaked city of Neomuna, on the planet Neptune, where the Guardians battle Calus and come face to face with The Witness. The game is most likely to be released this year.
Here are the details of the story, release date, and other relevant information about Destiny 2 Lightfall.
What is the Release Date of Destiny 2 Lightfall?
The wait is over. Destiny 2 Lightfall is set to release on the 28th of February, 2023. Reportedly, alongside the Destiny 2 Lightfall release date, will also be a new season, the first of four.
What is the Story of Destiny 2 Lightfall?
In the current expansion of Lightfall, you will get to fight against The Witness and his disciple Calus, who has been gathering an army of Cabals known as Shadow Legion that has taken over the futuristic city of Neomuna, set on the planet Neptune.
The Shadow Legion is engaged in harnessing a mysterious new power known as Suppression, and it is your job, alongside the other guardians and Cloudstrides, to combat Calus and protect the city.
The synopsis of Destiny 2 Lightfall on the official website of Bungie is as under:
“Shattered glass glints in the starlight. Soldiers of the Shadow Legion battle with Guardians under the unmistakable shadows of the fleet overhead – the Witness and its newest Disciple are here. Amid the chaos, begin a journey that will reveal the hidden threads that bind us, the ability to unravel them, and the mastery to weave them anew. With this new power in hand, find strength in your fellow Guardians and triumph in the face of impossibility; Legendary mode returns.”
There is Destiny 2 Lightfall Strand
As a surprise, Lightfall introduces a new subclass to the game called Strand.
Similar to Stasis in Beyond Light, this subclass is a darkness subclass that effectively tears open reality and lets you tug on the wires that connect all living beings.

This feature is nothing but a grappling hook, letting you grapple onto thin air to fuse to specific objects. You can see a hunter grappling onto a Titan doing a Thundercrash super in the trailer, or onto a moving train in the original showcase. This hook is also likely to add another layer to your exploration of Neptune’s capital city, with areas and secrets that are only accessible when you use this feature. Here are some more updates on this feature:
- Threadrunner (Hunter)
A roaming super where the Hunter can create a rope dart made out of Strand which can further perform AoE attacks or stab out at particular targets.
- Tyrant (Titan)
A roaming super that appears similar to Fists of Havoc, where you form blades made of Strand. It can perform spinning AoE attacks, or strike at individual enemies.
- Architect (Warlock)
A projectile super firing a barrage of three Strand missiles that unweave on impact. It is not clear what it means, but it looks to add AoE damage after effect.
Besides this, it also appears that the Hunter has a Shatterdive-esque ability to lift enemies into the air and pin them in place with Strand.
On What Platforms will Destiny 2 Lightfall be Made Available?
According to the official website, Lightfall will be made available on varied platforms – PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox X/S, as well as PC through Steam, Windows, and the Epic Game Store. While Bungie was taken over by Sony in 2022, both parties have expressed their interest in Destiny 2 remaining multiplatform. Thus, fret not, for Xbox players will not be left behind.
What is the Player Experience at Destiny 2 Lightfall Like?
Reportedly, the gaming platform is looking forward to improving the experience for existing and new players by incorporating in-game load-out and mod manager, as well as the Guardian Ranks system. The mod menu was compared to the armor cosmetic system of the game developer and is likely to let the players create load-outs and then apply them in-between activities. At present, most players make use of Destiny Item Manager for load-outs and inventory management; however, it is completely reliant on the API that has caused issues this season.

Guardian Ranks are a new system of eleven brackets aiding new players to work out to understand the game even better and reflect their overall mastery of Destiny’s various content. It appears as if some of the ranks may require you to help newer players complete their activities, raids, or dungeons. At the end of these activities, you can give commendations further reflecting how reliable of a fire team member you are.
Although there are no plans of launching it alongside Lightfall, Bungie is still looking forward to an LFG fireteam finder. According to a few reports, it will be similar to the system that the Destiny 2 app currently uses, and will let you search for fireteams making specific activities or post an ad looking for players to do an activity with. You can expect it sometime in 2023.
Is there an Update about the Crafting of Destiny 2 Lightfall?
The weapon crafting system has created havoc across the gaming industry, and it is receiving some overhauls. Here is a look into the broad strokes.
- Removal of non-craftable Deepsight Weapons
- More ways to earn crafting currencies apart from Deepsight Weapons.
- More options to let the players target the number of craftable weapons they want to unlock.
- Master raid weapons will get enhanced perks so that they do not fall behind craftable ones.
On the account of having any non-craftable Deepsight Resonance weapons tucked away, you should complete them before Lightfall, which is when they will be removed.
Is Destiny 2 Lightfall Available to Preorder?
Currently, there are two editions of Destiny 2 Lightfall available for pre-order, namely Lightfall Standard Edition and Lightfall + Annual Pass. If you buy the latter, you will have access to the new Lightfall Dungeon Key and unlock several new Ornaments and Exotic Cosmetics.
What is Destiny 2’s Future After Lightfall?
The good news is that Bungie has not only committed to more Destiny content after Lightfall but also named the next expansion. According to some reports, Destiny 2: The Final Shape will be arriving sometime in 2024, but currently, not many details can be on board about this project. The game developer stated that The Witch Queen is a ‘moment of acceleration towards the end’, but what that end shakes out to be is anyone’s guess – is it a new arc to the story or a mere version of Destiny 2 existing in perpetuity?
