The Detroit Tigers have made a notable shift since the MLB trade deadline on July 30. At that time, their future looked bleak with a 52-57 record, marked by injuries and unpromising performance. In light of this, general manager Jeff Greenberg decided to offload several key players. Pitcher Jack Flaherty was traded to the Dodgers, veteran outfielder Mark Canha went to the Giants, while reliever Andrew Chafin and catcher Carson Kelly were sent to the Rangers.
However, against all odds, the Tigers improved their performance after these trades. Young talents like Riley Greene, Trey Sweeney, Kerry Carpenter, and Colt Keith have stepped up in September. Meanwhile, left-handed pitcher Tarik Skubal has emerged as a strong contender for the AL Cy Young award.
In a remarkable turnaround, the Tigers have won 11 out of their last 14 games, moving ahead of the Minnesota Twins for the final American League wild-card slot with just six games left in the season. This shift has injected excitement into the AL wild-card race, which had seemed almost stagnant just weeks earlier.
As it stands, both the Kansas City Royals and Tigers are tied at 82-74, targeting the final positions for playoff contention. The Twins trail them by one game at 81-75, followed closely by the Mariners, two games behind with a record of 80-76. Each of these teams has six games remaining, setting the stage for a thrilling conclusion to the regular season.
Tigers manager A.J. Hinch remains cautious, emphasizing the need to stay grounded despite the recent successes. “We still have a long way to go,” he noted, capturing the team’s commitment to remain focused.
On the other hand, the Minnesota Twins have struggled, losing 11 of their last 17 games. The Royals, once in contention, have also encountered difficulties, suffering a seven-game losing streak, which includes a disappointing 7-16 record since August 28.
In a dramatic turn in the National League, the Arizona Diamondbacks experienced a devastating loss that could haunt them for the rest of the season. Leading 8-0 against the Milwaukee Brewers in the third inning, the Diamondbacks appeared poised to sweep the four-game series. However, they faltered dramatically, allowing the Brewers to stage a comeback and win 10-9. This marked the largest blown lead in franchise history.
Manager Torey Lovullo expressed frustration, acknowledging the critical nature of the slip-up. “If you slice it up any possible way, you can’t give up seven runs in three innings,” he stated. “You’re going to lose a lot of baseball that way, if that’s what comes out of your bullpen. That is not our bullpen. They’re going to pick it up.”
The NL wild-card race remains highly competitive. The San Diego Padres, currently at 90-66, are close to clinching a playoff spot. The New York Mets and Diamondbacks, both at 87-69, occupy the current final wild-card positions, while the Atlanta Braves are two games behind at 85-71.
In managerial news, the Cincinnati Reds parted ways with David Bell after six seasons, citing disappointing results this year, evidenced by a 76-81 record despite expectations to compete for a playoff spot. The shake-up in management may not be over, as other coaches, including Skip Schumaker from Miami and Derek Shelton from Pittsburgh, find themselves under scrutiny.
Earlier in August, the Chicago White Sox removed Pedro Grifol and three of his coaching staff after an abysmal stretch that highlighted a 21-game losing streak tied for the American League record. Additionally, the Seattle Mariners dismissed Scott Servais during his ninth season with the franchise.
The White Sox also equaled a post-1900 MLB record on Sunday, losing their 120th game of the season in a 4-2 defeat to the San Diego Padres. They now match the infamous 1962 New York Mets in this dubious category. With six games left, Chicago’s performance could still affect playoff positions, especially their upcoming series against the Tigers, who are in a playoff chase.
With the postseason drawing nearer, the competitive atmosphere within both leagues turns increasingly intense, while teams must navigate their remaining schedules with precision and purpose.
