The ID Wallet smartphone app, which was withdrawn after the go-ahead for the digital driver’s license in Germany, should be available again in a few weeks. The announced government spokesman Steffen Seibert. The relaunch of the app should be combined with improvements in user guidance. The system should then also be geared towards higher payloads.

Seibert said there was no successful attack or hacking of the system. After the digital driving license was launched, there was a high level of demand. By September 28, there had been almost 300,000 downloads. This led to “unexpected peak loads” and impaired the use of the ID wallet.

The digital driver’s license, which is to be kept in the ID wallet, is intended to make it easier, for example, to rent a car or to use car sharing offers, according to the plans of the still-in-office federal government. In the long term, according to the Ministry of Transport, the digital image of the driver’s license on the smartphone should be able to completely replace the analogue paper, for example for ID checks.

The app is supposed to be a “digital wallet” on the smartphone. The electronic identity card can also be uploaded to the app. The federal government expects that further use cases will follow in 2021. State minister Dorothee Bär had mentioned the registration for prepaid contracts or the online account and deposit opening at banks.
