Despite its steep drop in the box office in recent days from its initial figures, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness remains the leading film in theaters since its release on May 6. Sam Raimi’s film, in addition, is already the highest-grossing of 2022, surpassing The Batman.
As reported by Variety, Doctor Strange 2 has reached this weekend the 800 million dollars of collection worldwide (342 million in the United States and 461 outside its borders), which makes the film about the batman and become the highest-grossing of the year.
In the North American country, however, the film starring Benedict Cumberbatch has not yet managed to be the leading film of the year at the box office, since The Batman has grossed 369 million.
If Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness continues to hold on to these figures, it could become the second film to reach a billion dollars since the pandemic began. The only one that has managed to overcome that barrier is Spider-Man: No Way Home, which was close to reaching two billion despite the fact that the film, like Doctor Strange 2, is not screened in either China or Russia.
The sequel to the Sorcerer Supreme is thus a huge success for Marvel, whose releases accounted for 30% of the total collection of films in 2021 in the United States, with Eternals, Black Widow, Shang-Chi and the legend of the Ten Rings and the aforementioned Spider-Man: No Way Home placing in the sixth, fourth, second and first place respectively.
The next appointment in theaters for the millions of followers of the Marvel serial is set for July 8, when Thor: Love and Thunder land in theaters, the fourth installment of the saga starring Chris Hemsworth that will feature the return of Natalie Portman and the signing of Christian Bale as a great villain.
