Fashion’s elite paid homage to the late Karl Lagerfeld at the star-studded Met Gala on Monday night, sporting a variety of stunning ensembles from the iconic German couturier’s oeuvre. Oscar winners Penelope Cruz and Nicole Kidman, supermodels Gisele Bundchen and Kate Moss, singers Dua Lipa and Rita Ora, and tennis legend Roger Federer were among the many celebrities in attendance.
Anna Wintour, editor-in-chief of Vogue magazine and organizer of the Met Gala, carefully selects the guest list, which includes luminaries from the worlds of fashion, film, politics, sports, and social media. This year’s gala featured a tribute to Lagerfeld, who passed away in 2019, with an exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute titled “Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty.”
Many of the guests at the event wore designs by Lagerfeld, particularly his signature black suits. Kidman donned a pink Chanel gown that she had worn 20 years earlier in an advertisement for the brand’s perfume, while Lipa sported a vintage cream-colored wedding dress designed by Lagerfeld for Chanel in the 1990s.
Despite his immense talent as a designer, Lagerfeld was not without controversy, having made critical comments about curvy women and dismissing the #MeToo movement. However, the exhibition focused solely on his contributions to the fashion industry and did not include his controversial statements.
Talking about the legendary designer, Carla Bruni, ex-model, singer, and former first lady of France, said, “It is an honor to be here to celebrate the extraordinary career of my dear friend. His creativity and captivating charm were unparalleled, and his kindness never wavered.”
Attendance at the Met Gala is by invitation only, with attendees required to pay $50,000 and a table reservation costing $300,000. All proceeds from the event go to the Costume Institute.
