Dolphins Place Tagovailoa on IR Due to Concussion Injury

On September 17, the Miami Dolphins officially placed quarterback Tua Tagovailoa on the injured reserve list after he sustained his third concussion in the NFL and a total of four overall during a recent game against the Buffalo Bills.

Tagovailoa will be sidelined for at least four weeks as he recovers from the concussion suffered while scrambling on a fourth-down play deep in the Bills’ territory during the third quarter of the game.

During the play, Tagovailoa collided headfirst with the hip of Bills safety Damar Hamlin, resulting in the concussion. Following the incident, he was taken out of the game but walked off the field after an initial medical evaluation.

Damar Hamlin himself returned to the field after a life-threatening injury he encountered 20 months prior during a regular tackle against the Cincinnati Bengals on January 2, 2023.

In the game, Tagovailoa completed 17 of 25 passes for 145 yards, a touchdown, and three interceptions before being sidelined with the head injury. The Dolphins ultimately lost to the Bills, with a final score of 31-10, bringing the team’s record to 1-1 for the season.

With Tagovailoa out of action, Skylar Thompson is set to take over as the starting quarterback. Tagovailoa will not be able to return until at least October 21.

In response to this development, the Dolphins announced plans to sign former practice squad quarterback Tyler Huntley from the Baltimore Ravens to serve as Thompson’s backup.

This recent concussion marks the third time Tagovailoa has been diagnosed with a concussion in the NFL, adding to two similar occurrences in 2022, as well as a concussion he suffered while playing for the Alabama Crimson Tide during his college career.
