Dolphins to Sign QB as Tua Tagovailoa Recovers from Concussion

The Miami Dolphins are set to welcome another quarterback to the roster as they navigate the situation surrounding starter Tua Tagovailoa, who is currently dealing with a concussion. Coach Mike McDaniel confirmed this decision on Friday.

In Tagovailoa’s absence, rookie Skylar Thompson will take the reins as the Dolphins’ starting quarterback. Tagovailoa sustained his third known concussion in the past 24 months during Thursday night’s 31-10 loss to the Buffalo Bills, exiting the game in the third quarter.

Coach McDaniel expressed confidence in Thompson, stating that the team trusts the young quarterback to lead effectively. “The team and the organization are very confident in Skylar,” he commented.

As for Tagovailoa’s status, no decision has been made regarding placing him on injured reserve. The quarterback was expected to arrive at the team facility on Friday for thorough evaluations regarding his health.

McDaniel emphasized the importance of navigating this uncertain situation, acknowledging that the team must remain prepared for various outcomes. He clarified that the assessment of Tagovailoa’s condition will rely heavily on input from both Tagovailoa himself and the medical staff. “We just have to operate in the unknown and be prepared for every situation,” he stated.

Looking ahead, McDaniel does not foresee Tagovailoa participating in Miami’s upcoming game against Seattle on September 22. He shared, “I have no idea, and I’m not going to all of a sudden start making decisions that I don’t even see myself involved in the most important parts of.”

In a personal appeal, McDaniel reminded Tagovailoa of his responsibilities outside of football. “All I’m telling Tua is everyone is counting on you to be a dad, and be a dad this weekend. And then we’ll move from there,” he said, stressing that further discussions about Tagovailoa’s future will be contingent upon insights from medical professionals and the player’s own well-being.

During the game before his injury, Tagovailoa was completing his passes effectively, going 17 for 25 with 145 yards gained, one touchdown, and three interceptions. Notably, one interception was returned for a touchdown by the Bills. Skylar Thompson stepped in to complete 8 of 14 passes for a total of 80 yards.

After the game, Thompson projected confidence about his ability to manage the Dolphins’ offense. “What’s going to lie ahead, who knows? But man, I’m confident, though,” he remarked. “I feel like I’m ready for whatever’s to come. I’m going to prepare and work hard and do everything I can to lead this team and do my job.”
