Dragon Age 4 will not have versions for PlayStation 4 ni Xbox One, the platforms of the last generation of Sony and Microsoft. EA has confirmed to VentureBeat information initially suggested by the LinkedIn profile of a BioWare employee. When asked about it, the North American company confirms that this fourth numbered installment will only see the light in PS5, Xbox Series X|S y PC.
In all generations of consoles, there comes a time when developments stop taking into account the hardware of the previous cycle; either due to technical limitations or because the new generation has installed a user base significant enough not to have to resort to the previous one. Sometimes it is a sum of both factors.
BioWare will not repeat the case of Dragon Age: Inquisition
Dragon Age 4 is the first known game in EA’s portfolio to make this decision. Battlefield 2042, FIFA 21 or Mass Effect: Legendary Collection have developed a specific edition for the veteran PS4 and Xbox One; although in the case of the imminent war title, the capacity of players in multiplayer games will be considerably reduced, going from 128 to 64 players.
Those sacrifices won’t be made in the new BioWare, which will focus its efforts on the new consoles.
In the absence of knowing the specific reasons, the study will not have to be in a situation similar to that of Dragon Age: Inquisition, whose versions of PS3 and Xbox 360 limited the aspirations at the level of design and scale of the work.
Dragon Age 4 has no release window. At the moment, we know that it will be a kind of reboot for the saga and it will be, now, a pure experience of a new generation. The latest information we have dates back to July, when the producer of the title revealed that they were making great progress. That was how they justified their absence at EA Play Live 2021.
