Pugh is reportedly close to joining the sequel to Denis Villeneuve’s sci-fi blockbuster, according to Variety and The Hollywood Reporter (THR). Pugh is anticipated to play Princess Irulan Corrino, the oldest daughter of Padishah Emperor Shaddam Corrino IV, and another love interest of Timothée Chalamet’s Paul Atreides if she goes on to the sequel to Dune. Intriguingly, Chalamet and Pugh will rejoin on film in Dune Part 2 for the first time since the 2019 version of Little Women.
In Greta Gerwig’s acclaimed period drama, the two portrayed Theodore Laurence and Amy March, respectively, a far cry from the sci-fi nature of Dune and its in-development sequel.
Dune Part 2 is set to begin filming in the summer of 2022, with a probable October 2023 release date. According to THR, Russia’s current invasion of Ukraine may jeopardize such objectives. Large portions of Dune were shot in Hungary, which, due to its proximity to Ukraine, might provide a significant scheduling challenge.
If Pugh joins Dune Part 2’s cast, it will be her second major film franchise appearance since 2020. With a standout performance as Yelena Belova, Natasha Romanoff’s younger sister, in 2020’s Black Widow, the British actor became an overnight Marvel movie sensation. Pugh just reprised her role in Disney Plus’ Hawkeye, and while she’s likely to appear in upcoming Marvel Phase 4 films, it’s unknown where Belova will appear next.
Villeneuve’s newest film, Dune, was a huge smash with both fans and critics. The sci-fi picture grossed over $400 million worldwide, which is a good haul considering it was released in cinemas and on HBO Max on the same day.
Florence Pugh Will Broad In For Dune 2
Florence Pugh is rumored to be in discussions to reprise her role as Princess Irulan in Dune: Part Two, and her casting would be ideal owing to Timothée Chalamet. Dune, directed by Denis Villeneuve, brought Frank Herbert’s science fiction classic to the big screen in 2021, with an all-star ensemble lead by Timothée Chalamet’s Paul Atreides. While Dune included a big ensemble of characters, Irulan was not one of them, despite the fact that MCU actor Florence Pugh is said to be in discussions to portray the role.
The HBO Max prequel project Dune: The Sisterhood, which centers on the Bene Gesserit, is still in the works. However, the inclusion of Pugh’s Princess Irulan in Dune Part 2 raises the possibility of a third Dune film. Princess Irulan only plays a minor role in Frank Herbert’s groundbreaking work. Emperor Shaddam offers Princess Irulan’s hand in marriage to Paul Atreides when he hands up the galactic crown to him. In Dune Messiah, Herbert’s sequel to Dune, Princess Irulan plays a larger role.
Pugh as Princess Irulan in Dune Part 2 would be an odd choice if the character has as minor a role as her book equivalent. It would make more sense if Pugh was hired with the goal of making a third Dune film in mind. Villeneuve has stated (according to Entertainment Weekly) that he intends to do three Dune films, so this appears to be the case. Of course, whether or not a third picture is made will be determined by public demand. We’d be astonished if Warner Bros. called it a day after two films, given how brilliantly Dune was received and the buzz surrounding Dune Part 2.
Irulan is the Emperor’s daughter and subsequently the wife of Paul Atreides in Herbert’s novels, implying that she will play a part in Villeneuve’s sequel. The director’s intentions for a Dune sequel were always in the works, and while the first picture hints to a possible plot line, Herbert’s novels offer a vast source of inspiration. Villeneuve is expected to bring back the cast of Dune, which includes Zendaya’s Chani (who got very little screen time in Dune), Rebecca Ferguson, Javier Bardem, and Stellan Skarsgard.
As Irulan, Pugh’s Dune casting would be ideal. While Pugh has established herself as one of the world’s most gifted actors in recent years, her prospective role in Dune 2 is based on her relationship with Chalamet. With Timothée Chalamet as Paul Atreides in the lead, Pugh might portray his (future) wife. This would be excellent because the two have already established their on-screen chemistry.
Dune 2 Cast Updates
Pugh is a well-known and accomplished actress in her own right, so she’d fit right in with Dune’s star-studded ensemble. Pugh’s acting skill isn’t the only reason she’d be a good fit for Irulan, despite her recent role as Yelena in the MCU’s Hawkeye and Black Widow. Because Irulan is intimately engaged with Paul in the novels, she’d most likely share multiple scenes with Timothée Chalamet in this, their second collaboration.
Pugh and Chalamet previously acted together in Little Women in 2019, for which Pugh was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress, and Dune 2 might see them benefit from their on-screen chemistry once more. While both performers are outstanding in their own right, watching them rejoin as Paul and Irulan is a thrilling possibility, especially following the critical accolades for Little Women. Furthermore, Pugh has proved her ability to represent complicated and nuanced characters, which suggests that Dune 2 will correct an Irulan book error by giving the character a greater part early in the franchise’s tale.
It remains to be seen if Pugh will be confirmed in the post. Given her previous work with Chalamet and her apparent acting skill, having her cast as Princess Irulan in Dune 2 would be a welcome addition to the sequel’s ensemble. Pugh as Irulan would not only be fantastic in Dune: Part Two, but it would also be a great chance for her to put her past work with Chalamet to good use.
