Electric car Renault Megane E-Tech Electric: four stages of charging

Renault has opened the configurator of the Megane E-Tech Electric. The curious can now put the car together. However, interested parties have not yet received any prices. A pre-order is still possible against payment of 100 euros; the actual sales start will begin in March 2022.

The Renault Megane E-Tech Electric is a direct competitor of the VW ID.3. It has front-wheel drive, unlike the vehicles based on the Volkswagen Group’s modular electrification kit (MEB). The Renault battery system is particularly flat. This means that the Megane E-Tech Electric is just under 7 centimeters lower than the ID.3 at 1.50 m. That could lead to better aerodynamics and more range on the autobahn. Customers can choose between two energy levels in the batteries: Either 40 kWh (motor output: 96 kW) or 60 kWh (motor output: 160 kW).

It is irritating how Renault designs the charging options: There are four lines called Standard, Boost, Super and Optimum Charge. The entry-level version with 40 kWh cannot charge with direct current, but only with alternating current (AC). A maximum of 7 kW charging power is possible with Standard Charge. In addition, if the basic model is actually only able to charge single-phase, this would mean on the German market that the full charging power can usually only be used on public charging infrastructure. In the private sector, the unbalanced load ordinance usually ends at 20 amperes per phase. At 230 volts that means 4.6 kW. With a wallbox that meets the KfW funding requirements, the Mégane E-Tech Electric achieves its maximum charging power of 3.7 kW.

For Boost Charge, the maximum charging power increases to 22 kW; the well-known three-phase device from the Renault Zoe (test) should be used here. On the public charging infrastructure that can provide this, the Mégane E-Tech Electric is fully charged in around two hours if the battery was previously completely empty. Renault will have to create a weighty incentive for the small battery through the vehicle price. Because long distances are likely to be tough, which only a minority will accept.

The larger battery with 60 kWh, on the other hand, is basically DC-capable and can charge with up to 130 kW. Super Charge is the combination of 130 kW DC charging power and 7 kW on the AC side. Optimum Charge combines the fast DC speed with the three-phase AC charger and 22 kW. In practical terms, the small battery size in the Renault Megane E-Tech should only be suitable for commuting and everyday trips to work, kindergarten or sports. If you also want to drive long tours, you have to resort to the 60 kWh memory. The charging options summarized:

The three equipment lines Equilibre, Techno and Iconic can be freely configured with the different charging levels Standard, Boost, Super and Optimum Charge. With the equipment options typical for electric cars, it is noticeable that the “Winter Performance Package” with heat pump can only be ordered in the second highest performance line, Super Charge. Our interpretation: With Optimum Charge, the heat pump could be standard, while it is not available for Standard and Boost Charge. Volkswagen offers a DC charging power of 50 kW as standard in the basic version of the ID.3. The catch: Due to the lack of chips, it cannot be ordered at the moment.
