SpaceX CEO Elon Musk announced Tuesday that Starlink broadband satellite Internet service will be available within a few weeks almost anywhere on the planet.
“In August we should have global connectivity everywhere, except at the poles“, He said Musk during his virtual speech at the Mobile Telephony World Congress held in the Spanish city of Barcelona. He also indicated that in the next 12 months the number of active users of that service it will reach half a million. The number of clients “is growing rapidly,” he added.
How affordable is that service?
The Starlink kit, which among other devices includes a satellite antenna, costs around 500 dollars, while the monthly subscription it is around $ 100, but the price of this compost will be “the same all over the world,” Musk said.
In addition, he stressed that SpaceX is working on next generation antennas that can offer the same service at a lower price. “We would like to reduce the cost of the terminal from $ 500 to $ 200 to $ 350,” he said. On the other hand, Elon Musk revealed that Starlink at the moment has two alliances with “the main telecommunications companies“from the US, and that they are in negotiations with other companies.
Starlink is an initiative launched by SpaceX with the purpose of creating in the future a massive ‘constellation’ 42,000 satellites to provide Internet access in every corner of the Earth.
