The wife of Joaquín ‘El Chapo’ Guzmán, the 32-year-old former model and businesswoman known as the Kardashian of Sinaloa, will go to prison. A Washington court on Tuesday sentenced her to three years in prison for the crimes of drug trafficking and money laundering, of which she had pleaded guilty. Coronel, who has US and Mexican citizenship, is the third wife of the bloodthirsty drug trafficker, sentenced in 2019 to life imprisonment after his extradition to the United States.

Judge Rudolph Contreras has chosen the accused for a sentence of one year less than the four requested by the prosecution, considering, above all, two factors: how young she was when she came into contact with El Chapo – she was 17 years old; he, 51- and that he had acknowledged responsibility for the acts for which he was accused. Shortly after 12 noon, Coronel addressed the court in Spanish to ask for forgiveness. “With all due respect, I am writing to you today to express my true regret for any damage I may have caused and I ask you, all the citizens of this country, to forgive me,” he said through an interpreter.

To the penalty of 36 months in prison, we must subtract the nine months that she has already been in the shade, in a prison in the State of Virginia, since she was arrested last February at Dulles airport, on the outskirts of the city of Washington. Now he must be transferred to a federal prison to serve the rest of his sentence. He had previously paid a $ 1.5 million fine.

Coronel had reached an agreement with the prosecution by which he admitted to having operated as a courier between Guzmán and the Sinaloa cartel, while the capo was imprisoned in the Altiplano center, in Mexico, after his arrest in 2014. That communication channel it was the one that allowed El Chapo to plan his escape in 2015. It was the end of his escape: after the new arrest in 2016, he was extradited to the United States and did not step on the street again.

Coronel always defended that he was completely ignorant of the criminal activities of her husband, who became the largest drug trafficker in the world and has a violent history behind him, but those allegations were proven false during the trial of El Chapo in New York. The prosecution showed a series of messages between the capo and his wife in which, for example, they advised him to communicate with encrypted telephones such as Blackberry’s and to contact the Sinaloa cartel technician. In others, he asks her if she has a weapon and she replies that she does, that she has the one that he himself had given her.

“He is a good man, he is not violent, nor rude, I have never seen him say a bad word. His girls adore him and constantly ask about him ”, said Coronel in an interview in Telemundo few years ago. “I am not aware that he is dealing in drugs. I’m in love with him, ”she insisted to the press. Because if the woman did not do something, it is to avoid the spotlight. On the contrary, he used to give interviews and even participated in a reality show in the United States called neither more nor less than Cartel Crew (The poster team), seven months after the conviction of her husband.

Because what she never pretended to ignore is her husband’s fame, from which, in fact, she tried to get as much profit as possible. He launched a clothing brand and the name El Chapo Guzmán was filed with the United States Patent and Trademark Office, with a lion’s head along with the three words as a logo.

El Chapo’s wife has been convicted, specifically, of conspiracy to traffic cocaine, methamphetamines, heroin and marijuana; as well as for money laundering and for being part of asset transactions owned by the cartel. Emma Coronel and El Chapo have twin daughters who were born in the United States in 2011 and are therefore US citizens. They join at least a dozen other children recognized by the drug trafficker with other women. The judge wished Coronel on Tuesday to raise them “in a different environment” than the one she had experienced.
