European stock markets open higher with Airbus boost

European stock markets opened higher on Thursday with impetus from Airbus (EPA:AIR), which also contributed to the French benchmark’s gains to near an all-time high, while mining companies led sectoral gains with higher commodity prices.

The pan-European index STOXX 600 It rose 0.7%. The CAC 40 French added 0.9% and led the gains among regional indexes.

Planemaker Airbus gained 2.9 percent, boosting both indexes.

The company set itself a target to deliver 720 aircraft by 2023, in line with its original estimate last year, but slowed production growth from its best-selling A320neo.

The European Mining Sector Index rose 1.4% as prices rebounded in copper in London from five-week lows, on hopes of a recovery in demand in China, the main consumer. [MET/L]

Optimism also spread from Asian markets, where investors chose to hail the strong U.S. retail sales data as good news for corporate earnings, rather than worry about the possibility of further interest rate hikes.
